Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  How much does the camp cost?
A: The camp is free.  Since space is limited, campers will be required to pay a $25 registration fee to secure their spot.
Q:  How big is the camp?
A: Participation is limited to 35 campers.
Q:  How are the participants chosen?
A:  The camp participants will be some of the most advanced high school math students in Maryland and the DC area.  Scores on math contests, interest in mathematics, high school grades, and a teacher’s recommendation will be considered.
Q:  What is the difference between the Brin Maryland Mathematics Camp and the Girls Talk Math Camp?
A: Both camps are organized by the Department of Mathematics. The Girls Talk Math Camp is designed to introduce mathematics to high school students. The Brin summer camp is suitable for high school students with an advanced knowledge of math. If you are not sure about which camp is best for you (or your child) please contact us.
Q:  What will I learn by attending BMMC?
A:  There will be two daily lecture series, accompanied by problem-solving sessions and other math-related activities.  The topics are university-level mathematics.
Q:  What do I need to know as a prerequisite?
A:  It is expected that the students’ backgrounds will vary.  Knowledge of calculus is required.
Q:  Is this a day camp or a residential camp?
A:  It is a day camp. Camp hours are from 9am-4pm.  There is no residential component.  The camp is available to rising sophomore, junior, and senior high school students.  Campers are responsible for transportation.
Q:  Who are the instructors and counselors?
A:  The BMMC is run by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland, College Park.  The instructors are faculty members, and the counselors are PhD students and undergraduate Math Majors.
Q:  What should I bring to the summer camp?
A: You should bring a device or smartphone for being able to contact your parents/guardian and a notebook.  Some activities will require a device that can access the internet (for the purposes of math activities on the cloud).  A laptop is not required.
Q:  How will drop off and pick up work?
A:  The Brin Center is conveniently located near the main entrance to campus (8169 Paint Branch Dr, College Park).  It is also close to parking and public transportation.  Campers are responsible for their own transportation.
Q:  Is lunch provided?  
A:  Lunch will be provided for free.  Optionally, you can bring your own food. We cannot accomodate all types of food allergies and restrictions. Please bring your own lunch if you have special dietry restrictions. All food you bring should be nonperishable since a refrigerator may not be available.
Q: What is the source of BRMC’s financial support?
A:  The BMMC is supported by a generous donation from Michael and Eugenia Brin.
